the gathering for life on earth

March 5, 2008

there is a festival this august in vancouver, canadia, called the gathering for life on earth. it is a pagan festival and it is held every year.

(note: there is a gratuitous half naked canadian girl over the hump, so, if you’re into that sort of thing, be sure to keep reading ) . . .

actually, despite the maple leaves on her teats and hoohaw, we have no real proof whatsoever that this girl is actually canadian. she seems a little tan for it to me.

but i digress. we were talking festivals.

this year will be the 16th gathering and the theme is the fool’s journey.

those of you familiar with the tarot will recognize the fool’s journey as the story that explains the major arcana cards and how they relate to each other.

in the fool’s journey, the fool (represented as card 0 in the major arcana) embarks on a journey, and as he walks he encounters 21 entities or situations that personify his journey through life from nothingness to completion.

now, given my situation and the fact that the festival is not only in canadia, but hard up against the ocean way out in left-canadia, there’s no chance of me going, but when a friend linked me the web site on a forum i frequent, i went to check it out and lo and behold it turns out they were looking for artists to submit a logo for this year’s gathering (that is last year’s logo currently up on the main page)

well, as it happens i had begun work on a tarot deck earlier last year and i started with the fool card

i submitted it on a lark and promptly forgot about it.

until two days ago when they sent me an e-mail saying they were considering my picture, but could only use the color image in a web based medium. for all print medium (t-shirts and the like) they would need a black and white image and could i send them one.

well, i do most of my work in photoshop, so dragging the outline away from the colors was easy enough, but in images where i use color, the outline is barely a ghost-image, so i had to go through and fill it all in and rework the border and the backdrop.

this is the result

and i have to say, i almost like it better than the original. i am getting ready to send it off right now (with and without border and text, and with and without backdrop).

if they choose my image (they won’t decide until april) i won’t get paid for it, but i will get exposure, and at this stage of the game i am totally willing to whore for that.

anyway, wish me luck, kids.

crossing fingers and toes and sending all the luck I can mange….

there would be a certain irony if it is accepted to th meaning behind the design …

    I hope it works out

Absolutely brilliant. I love them both and as a Canadian girl (not usually gratuitously half naked…in public) I think you’re right about the tan and further to that, she seems to be wondering what the hell is on her feet. Best of luck. You’ve created something to be very proud of.

Oh wow! That would be so rocking if you won. I was going to tell you that I LOVED the Fool you did for me for Tsard.

If I win the lottery, I’ll take your family to the festival.

I would so love to go to that.
