there is a big stir in the church these days over the ONE TRUTH the central truth around which all else is at best window dressing and at worst faithless lies

the concern gets particularly deep when you ask a traditionalist about what has become known as the emergent church.

send the emergent church to ireland and the troubles will be over

the emergent church has done what no other force before it has managed. it has united the myriad denominations. catholic and protestant, baptist and pentecostal, mormon and . . . erm . . . well, okay, they’re not THAT good.

but in general the various denominations of christendom agree that the emergent church has forsaken the TRUTH for new age wishy-washy wishful thinking.

i disagree.

as i see it, jesus left the church with a harvest of grapes we’ll call the TRUTH.

christianity in its many permutations has been adding sugar and hellfire over the centuries, reducing the grapes (the TRUTH, remember) – with this healthy dose of saccharine and fear – to a quivering mass of grape jelly.

the emergent church on the other hand, has denied the jelly and begun holding up grapes

the traditional church, of course, is pissed to see all their hard work undone.

me, i look at those emergent folk and what they are doing and how they are living and for the first time in my life i begin to see why that jesus fellow had such a huge impact on the world and the people closest to him.

I think most religions in general have gone down the same path: from 90% proof to weak as piss, distorted over time by the manipulations of people who want control & power.

Grape jelly you say? Ain’t just jelly, it’s fermented and smells funny too!

I think it is the nature of religions to change over time. I also think that if there is one thing that humans are good at, it’s distorting things to serve their own purposes. Trust no one, in or out of church. God (or the grapes) is the only thing that’s for real, regardless of where you choose to worship him/her/them.

Cat: Yeah change is the only constant in the world, but the best thing of it all is God (or the grapes) or whatever else you might want to call it/him/her/them or not at all accepts us all regardless of whether we believe and even if we are the ones distorting everything to suit our own ends.

Saints and sinners, ain’t nothing different, just grapes tossed into different bottles with different labels.
