if god dropped acid, would he see People?

October 19, 2006

natives who beat drums to drive off evil spirits are objects of scorn to smart americans who blow horns to break up traffic jams.

elitism is the plague of the modern world. perhaps the plague of any world. i mean, when did we start playing this game? when did we determine that acquiring x set of factors makes us better than someone who only measures up to y set of factors honestly, who decides?

i remember in high school bumping into this guy in the smoking court (jealous yet, kids?). he was part of the ‘stoner’ crowd, which in the early eighties meant a uniform consisting of jeans, jean jacket, and the obligatory concert t-shirt. i was wearing a tie that day. i did that sometimes. i look good in a tie.

he sneered at me over his cigarette and spat one word, “conformist”

i looked at him. i looked at the ten or twelve denim-clad, band-promoting clones that surrounded him. and absorbed a life lesson.

i am not what anyone in their right mind (or even on their worst acid trip) would describe as ‘cool’ but i do follow my own path. and every now and again i will look around me to see if i have begun slipping into the great androgyny that is the conformity of our age . . .
